Quickie: Tough-talkin' leather-wearin' super cop Shaft sticks it in as he goes after a filthy rich racist killer, anyway he can.

Turn-Ons:

  • Shaft's pretty happenin' wardrobe.
  • The cheesy lines have got to make you laugh…(or cry?)
  • The drug dealer character named Peoples played by Jeffrey Wright. "Tiger Wooooo..."
  • The funky "jagged edge" scene transitions. Pure old school.

Turn-Offs:

  • Are you a pacifist? Then don't watch this movie.
  • Vanessa Williams sans 13 lbs. of makeup is one scary sight.
  • Just the overall old school feel and look of the movie contrasted against the obvious present day setting.
  • Some rather slow parts in the movie, probably due to the old school feel they were after.

Judging from the previews that I saw, I felt like watching "Shaft" about as much as I felt like getting an enema. And besides, I never watched the series, anyway.

1

initial expectations

2

I laughed when I first saw the trailer... I said yeah right! Samuel Jackson looked pretty goofy in the trailers.

I didn't fall asleep or anything. I really wanted that bigot to go to jail, so I watched. And it was pretty fun counting Shaft's casualties.

pace

Has some slow parts, but otherwise okay. Keeps rolling, old school style.

The plot reminded me a bit of a TV show dragged out for 98 minutes. But it was interesting enough.

3

plot/story

4

Well, considering my initial low expectations of the movie, I thought the plot was laid out well and believable.

Samuel L. Jackson played his part well. But I think he overacted at times. Christian Bale and Jeffrey Wright stole the show in my eyes.

3

cast/acting

5

Excellent characterization and excellent acting, especially those of Peoples, the drug dealer, and Wade, the bad boy antagonist. And Jackson didn't look that goofy after all!

The movie had a really good 70's feel, look, and sound to it. It almost made me want to relive that era. Almost. Not quite.

3

cinematography

4

I especially liked the attention to detail to scene transitions. You don't get to see much of that in these days of modern movies. I think the overall old school feel they were after was conveyed nicely.

I would've wanted to see more lovin' and less killing. But Shaft was too busy trying to catch the bad guy to engage much in er…extracurricular activities.

3

the good stuff: like sex and violence

3

I heard the original Shaft was THE man! No good eye candy to look at. But, ice picks as weapons work well.

If you want to see a movie with lotsa action, then "Shaft" will do. There's also a nice touch of drama there somewhere. Talk about blood, sweat, and tears. Hehehehe...

other films in genre

In terms of summer blockbuster and crime stories, it rates average. Nothing too spectacular to rave about, and I've seen worse before.
